December may be my most favorite time of the year. Aside from my birthday, Christmas and New Year also comes in the same month. And living here in the UAE means that practically half of the month of December are holidays (no kidding!). This may be one of my most memorable Decembers in recent years. Much to our surprise, my aunt’s family from the UK gave us a short visit and decided to spend Christmas here. While my cousin Dingdong wasn’t able to come with them, we still had a good time while they were here. Here, I shall recount each event with a picture.

Despite being a muslim country, the UAE still manages to allow people to celebrate Christmas. Definitely, I'll be looking back at this month and how it reminded me that everything is fine as long as you are with your family.

Movie Review: The Day The Earth Stood Still

I first learned about the film when I saw a clip from 1996’s Independence Day. Then, I learned about the original film is about a certain ‘being’ named Klaatu that came to Earth accompanied by a biomechanical robot named Gort, bend on destroying humankind for the sake of saving the planet against the never-ending attitude of humans against each other and its surroundings (i.e., war, racism, global warming, etc.) Usually, remakes like these have dominated Hollywood for some time now, and the bad thing is, most of these don’t do the original film some justice. I haven’t really seen the original film so seeing this film gives me a whole different perspective on the film. The movie starts out great actually, building up the tension and gives this creepy atmosphere on how humankind reacts to an event like an alien invasion. However, the second part of the film fails for me, ending to abruptly without any proper closure for all the characters. In the end, it feels like just like a big special effects blockbuster that probably some people will love. The underlying themes of the movie however was a good thing to notice, which pokes some realism into what is happening right now. Acting was only subpar, with Jennifer Connelly giving the most decent performance. Keanu Reeves as the emotionless Klaatu was rightfully emotionless. Even Will Smith’s son Jaden Smith’s performance was more convincing than Reeve’s. Overall, T.D.T.E.S.S. is still a fun popcorn flick and a nice film to see this holiday season. The Day The Earth Stood Still: 7/10.

Movie Review: Quantum of Solace

Yes, I know. It’s been weeks since this movie was shown. But with the amount of work I had to do, this is the only chance I could. Now onto the film - the first James Bond movie starring Daniel Craig, Casino Royale, was actually one of my favorite Bond films. Of course, hearing that the sequel will come out by 2007, I was pumped and ready to watch it. The story continues one hour after the end of Casino Royale. The story goes from there, with revenge being the main theme of the film. Monologuing villains and Bond babes are still present, as with any other James Bond movie. How did I think of it? Same as everyone else which is too much action, literally from start to finish the action scenes went off the screen one by one. That doesn’t mean the action isn’t good, it’s just too much. Story was too thin, and not as deep as the last film. While some complained about the lack of gadgetry and the likeness of the film to the Bourne movie franchise, it was a welcome change for me. Grittier action is what I want (but that’s just me). Another weird thing about the film was the theme song. It was nowhere near any of the Bond songs I’ve heard previously. And the title? Very, very deep I must say. Time will come when all James Bond movies are named after words I’ve never bothered reading. ;-) Btu defnitely, new Bond girl Oolga Kkurylenko was definitely hot. Wish she showed more skin though. Hehe! Director Marc Forster (Monster's Ball) decided to go more into action rather than plot, and with a very short running time, what else can you show in the film? I think I'll re-watch my copy of Casino Royale. Still, it was fun action flick, but reeling from the heels of Casino Royale, this movie could have done better. Quantum of solace: 6/10

The Dubai Mall

Ever since my Aunt got her new car (which I would drive when I get my license!), we were always out and about every weekend when we get the chance. Last weekend we finally got the chance to go to The Dubai Mall. As Wikipedia describes it, The Dubai Mall is the largest mall ever built on the planet. Built at the foot and an integral component of the Burj Dubai (currently, the world’s tallest skyscraper), the 20-billion-dollar project is the world's largest with 1,200 shops, 4 times as many as the new London Westfield centre. We went with my other relatives inside the Dubai Aquarium and Discovery Centre with a thousand variations of aquatic life inside an aquarium, including a great white shark (Yes, Jaws!). First of all, it’s officially my dad’s birthday but we celebrated a long time back. So Happy Birthday Dad… Hope everything’s for the best. ;-) Next is I would like to greet everyone a Happy Halloween! But since I am in Dubai I guess trick or treating here would be making a fool out of me. Instead, I plan to watch horror movies today. I actually just finished viewing The Exorcist, and it still creeps the hell out of me. Now I’m watching Halloween… and all its sequels. Guess this will be another long weekend. Happy Halloween!

GITEX Technology Week 2008

Anyways, last October 19-23m 2008, GITEX Technology Week was recently held at the Dubai World Trade Centre. The Fog

While trying not to emulate John Carpenter's horror flick, I felt that I needed a little release from all the pressures and deadlines I would have to meet. Just yesterday, a thick blanket of fog quickly enveloped Dubai. It may due to the weather changing since Winter is already coming. I do hope so since all this heat is driving me insane. See the pic? Everything feels like you're in Silent Hill. Since it wasearly in the morning I felt like running around the parking lot and enjoying the fog. I think for me it is the only way I could enjoy myself with all the work we had to do. Starting next week, GITEX will take up most of my day. It's scary since you have all these interviews to do and transcribe, but still fun since you will get a preview of some of the latest technologies each company has to offer. I hope I can make it through next week, and probably reward myself with another DVD purchase. Or even a Grande Mocha Frappucino with Caramel Drizzle from... guess you already know where.

I was recently invited to join Symantec in launching their newest Norton Antivirus 2009 software. Since this will be my chance to go to that place, I didn't hesitate to come.

I left for Madrid on a Monday everning, with a stop over at London-Heathrow Airport. Good thing the people kept placing me at a window seat - and this was always my view. Me thinks that I shouldn't be afraid of heights anymore.

At London-Heathrow, some part of me was thinking if I could just go here instead. I've always wanted to go to the UK and maybe someday I will. Good thing I got to go to a different terminal, and as I went out of the aircraft, I noticed the cold weather that dominates the country - and they say its summer. See the picture above? Yeap, it's dark and gloomy - kinda like Azkaban, if you know what I mean.

Arriving at Barajas Madrid Airport, I can't help but marvel at the airport's unique design. See the ceiling? It's made from wood. Just going through the airport is already an experience.

At Madrid, I got to stay at Hotel Puerta America, one of the five star hotels in the city. The hotel was deisgned by renowed architects, with each floor having a different theme and look. I stayed on the third floor, which was designed by David Chipperfield - which shows a black and white motiff.

This is one of the perks of being a journalist. I love my room. It seems like it is one of those rooms out from a magazine. If the room is good, the bathroom was even better.

Afterwards, I got dressed and attended the Norton conference. It was the launch of the 2009 version of their antivirus software. What's great is that they've presented the product so accurately and and convincingly that I even bought my own copy.

The next day I woke up early to find breakfast - aside from the one I ate from the hotel. I went around and found my favorite coffee place -Starbucks!

I got the chance to hop on to one of the tourist buses and got the chance to explore some of the sights in the city, including this cathedral.

I don't know, but seeing this fountain makes me wanna pee. ;-) Haha.

After a long day, i made my way back to the hotel and before I know it, I'm on my way back to Dubai. I wish I could have stayed longer, but I'll definitely be going back. This is one of the places I won't forget.

Ramadan

Today marks the first day of Ramadan here in the UAE (and every part of the world). It means Muslims must start the ritual of fasting before sunrise up until after sunset. Here, even if we have 6 hour work days, other non-Muslims must still be considerate to other people fasting. Maybe for me, it is a good way to lose weight (I hope). And this is probably a hectic work week for me, since my editor is not around, I'm in charge of everything... which also means that every fault the magazine has will be blamed on... well, on me. Wish me luck... ;-) Ramadan Kareem everyone!

Summer Movie Review 2008 # 12: Hellboy II: The Golden Army

Hellboy is back and better than ever. Big red now battles enemies from the unknown in this second installment from director Guillermo Del Toro. Showing hints from creatures in Pan's Labyrinth, he creates another mystic world of the supernatural. He mixes humor with action combined with great storytelling. Truly, he is one of the better directors fully capable of doing these types of films. Ron Pearlman was a great character playing Hellboy, and Selma Blair compliments by playing fire starter Liz. Their chemistry was fun and full of humor. The story seems a little reminiscent of Blade II’s storyline. Still, it is one of the better comic book films to come out this year. A definite must watch for fans of the first one. Hellboy II: The Golden Army 8.5/10

Summer Movie Review 2008 # 11: Tropic Thunder

Hands down, this is simply one of the best comedies I've seen in a while. With an all star cast top billed by Jack Black, Ben Stiller and Robert Downey, Jr. It's hard not to laugh at some of the dire situations these people put themselves in. They play actors making a war movie in the mountains of Vietnam. When their prima-donna attitudes costs the director to lash out at them, veteran soldier Nick Nolte advises the director to take it to the extreme - have all the actors on set and film the movie in real life, only that it got too real. This is actually one of the better films I've seen this year. It's not the typical comedy where something happens and the audience laughs, it's made funny because of the situations and lines the characters engage in. With a load of cameos from Tom Cruise, Matthew Mcconaughey, Jason Bateman, Tobey McGuire, Alicia Silverstone and Jon Voight - this is a definite must-see for everyone. Applauses definitely go to Robert Downey, Jr for playing 'a dude playing another dude disguised as a dude'... Honestly, I can't stop laughing from start to finish. Tropic Thunder: 9/10

Summer Movie Review 2008 # 10: The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

The O’Connell’s are back… with a new mummy… and a new Evy? While veteran Mummy actor Brendan Frasier still came along with John Hannah, a new bunch of cast members joined in for the new Eastern adventure. The plot talks of a Dragon Emperor entombed by a sorceress which, as always, was awoken again by the O’Connell’s. The story was typical and yet something was lacking in the way it was written. The film was written by Alfred Cough and Miles Millar, responsible for the Smallville series and the superb Spider-Man 2. However, this film feels like it was written with the action sequences in mind. Sure those scenes are spectacular, but it didn’t match the fun it had that the past two movies had. The performances were average and the new characters were actually just offered well nothing new… yes even the great Jet Li didn’t feel so great. It is a fun watch the first time, but that’s about it. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor: 5/10

Summer Movie Review 2008 # 9: Kung Fu Panda

"Everybody wants kung fu fighting..." That song actually only reminds me of those Jackie Chan films, which feature out of this world martial arts. It may seem that this film is another animated flick deemed especially for kids, but it seems the creators wanted something for adults too. While the story was typical of any animated movie (outcasts turns into the hero in the end), it was executed in a fun and funny way. The voices were also great. Performances by Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Dustin Hoffman and most especially jack Black gave life the cute furry characters featured in the film. It was definitely a fun movie, and a good break from all the smash blockbusters shown this summer season. Kung Fu Panda: 7.5/10

Summer Movie Review 2008 # 8: The Dark Knight

My most awaited movie of the summer turned out to be my most favorite film of the year. In this sequel to Batman Begins, we find Bruce Wayne dealing with the increased political and corruption in Gotham City. Along with that, a new kind of smile is lurking in the streets and he must stop it before he ruins the city. The story’s premise is simple yet it expands in a way that it shines a light on everyone’s desire to make Gotham City a better (or worse) place. The movie’s main quote “You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain” is played vey well throughout the film. As one tries to keep making the rights things, eventually in the end it’s him who becomes the villain. Watching this film definitely was fun, it combined a nice mix of action, great performances and storyline. Director Christopher Nolan definitely has a talent for writing and taking the Batman franchise on a darker tone. Performance need not to be mentioned as they were all superb. With an all star cast, each actor definitely gave their best for the part. Christian Bale was awesome as the Dark Knight, yet I still find it weird that he has a much lower voice when he’s Batman. Michael Caine has a less prominent part in this film, yet every scene that he’s in makes up for it. Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox was the all time creator of Batman’s weapons and armor and he plays the part with intellect and seriousness. Rachel Dawes is now played by Maggie Gyllenhaal taking the role previously played by Katie Holmes. I think Maggie played a better role in this, emphasizing that she’s no damsel in distress, even when she is. Detective Gordon played by Gary Oldman has a bigger part in this film and this clearly shows that he’s the right man for the part. Harvey Dent or most commonly known as Two Face, has an appearance in this film and Aaron Eckhart’s portrayal is another one that you shouldn’t miss. And who wouldn’t forget Heath Ledger’s excellent performance as The Joker? He simply breathed more life into the character. His no empathy for killing combined with slapstick humor makes it one of the most memorable performances in the film. Surely everyone agrees with me as this is one of the best films of the year! The Dark Knight: 9/10

Summer Movie Review 2008 # 7: Hancock

Nearly every summer movie has at least one or two superhero movies showing. While Hancock advertised itself as a superhero film, one thing is noticeable: this is not your ordinary superhero. Will Smith plays John Hancock, an alcoholic superhero that does more damage to the city than its criminals. Rejected by society, a PR agent played by Jason Bateman offers his services to change his image and ultimately regain the people’s trust. I actually liked the story, in which it really focuses in trials that a superhero faces and not in an epic way. Expect no major action scenes or villains talking to themselves. This is a different kind of superhero movie. It was also great seeing Charlize Theron on the screen again. The story is simple yet it offers a fun watch especially for families. Hancock: 7/10

Summer Movie Review 2008 # 6: Wanted

First of all, I had to admit I had a hard time getting the director’s name since it is so hard to spell. Timur Bekmambetov. There, I’ll just mention him once. This is the director’s first American movie and based on his last projects (Day Watch and Night Watch), this surely is an action combined with a unique style of directing. In Wanted, James McAvoy plays Wesley Gibson, an average guy looking for more exciting things to do in life – until he is approached by Fox (Angelina Jolie) who tells him that his has a blood of an assassin and asks him to join them in pursuing the guy that killed his father. Sloan (Morgan Freeman) is the one who gives their assignments, which is given by the ‘Loom of Faith’. Superb action scenes with a touch of humor make this one of my favorite films of the year. Every shot was great and though the plot was somewhat predictable, I still enjoyed the film and actually went on to watch it over and over again. Kudos to Angelina Jolie, who looks sexier doing action films which was her benchmark for films when she started. Wanted: 8.5/10

Summer Movie Review 2008 # 5: Get Smart

After last year’s Bruce Almighty failed to impress critics and moviegoers, Steve Carell gets another chance at a summer blockbuster with Get Smart, a remake of the 60’s (?) TV show that they said wasn’t even a hit. The plot is so simple a 12 year old can write it. In it, Maxwell Smart has to eliminate a rogue agent out to kill every secret agent out there. While they’d promise hilarious antics along with smashing stunts, in the end the movie felt hollow. Not even Anne Hathaway’s uberly hot looks can save the film. A thin plot and unfunny jokes make Get Smart not a smart watch. Get Smart: 5/10

Summer Movie Review 2008 # 4: The Incredible Hulk

After learning that Universal is planning to reboot the Hulk franchise with a new cast and crew, I was a bit skeptical. But lo and behold, I was pretty amazed by how this movie was presented. Rip roaring nonsense action all throughout. Some may diss off this new film with no story or plot, but overall it was an enjoyable ride. The effects were definitely better and I surely liked the new actors playing the parts. Edward Norton was great in the portrayal of Bruce Banner, along with Liv Tyler’s Betty Ross. William Hurt was also better than Nick Nolte in playing Betty’s father out to destroy the Hulk. The Abomination, played by Tim Roth was definitely a better villain than the last film. All out action and mayhem ensure in this summer blockbuster from the director of The Transporter. A must watch for fans of the comic books. The Incredible Hulk: 8/10

Now that everything is in order, I shall be finishing the summer movie reviews I made of this year's summer blockbusters. Some movies were not in the list as I intentionally do not want to watch them.

Summer Movie Review 2008 # 3: The Chronicles of Narnia; Prince Caspian

When the first movie came out in 2005, I was never really into the film. Having recently watched too much medieval-themed movies and action epics, I thought this was one of the film that would pass and no. well, me lining up to see the second installment definitely made me change my mind.

This time, the sequel happens one year after the events of the first film. The four Pevensie children are summoned by Prince Caspian to aid against the battle between the Narnians and the Telemarines. Its story is not as complex as The Lord of the Rings, but its underlying Christian themes is what made me watch this film in the first place.

Ben Barnes definitely was amusing with this accent though it never got in the way of the scene. The mutual love between him and Susan wasn’t really a big deal for me but it could have been better if they’ve removed that part. While I was expecting Aslan to be a big part of the story, I was surprised that it wasn’t, and I just learned in the books that even though he appears in all seven Narnia books, his presence was just minimal.
Acting was good as always. Just like with the Harry Potter series, each character has grown up and surely delivered a more decent performance this time. The story is well-paced, and the action scenes were another thing to remember. This is surely another epic spectacle made for the whole family.

I definitely enjoyed the movie. Just like the first one, a couple of scenes surely made me laugh, made me teary-eyed and some that just made me shout “For Narnia!” Hell, even the audience was cheering during the battle scenes – and after the movie ended, there were loud applauses from everyone.

Andrew Adamson definitely knows how to direct a movie. Even the first Shrek film was good and along with the first Narnia film and this one, he surely knows how to entertain the audience. This is definitely one of my favorites this year. The film is a definite must-see. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Capsian: 8/10.

T.G.I.Fridays

Last Friday, I treated my Tita at Friday's, a restaurant chain famous for their awesome food anf fun atmoshpere. It was fun seeing the decors on the wall, the yellow cab door, movie props, authographed memorabilia. The place was just perfect. I ad a nice steak along with a side dish of fried seafood. It was simple delicious. Though admittedly the price is a little steep, this is definitely one of the best places to eat here.

World's Thinnest Notebook

Months after it launched, I finally got my hands on the MacBook Air. I didn't buy it though, it only came for testing in our labs (Oh I love my job)... As advertised it was suprisingly very thin and light. so light that when I placed in my bag I didn't even feel there was a notebook inside it. Though I am not really a Mac user, seeing this makes me even more interested in getting a Mac. The keypads were well-designed, the screen was superbly sharp and crisp and the multi-touch pad was awesome. Well most of you probably know its drawbacks: No internal optical drive and only one USB port. But it's still one of the best looking notebooks I've seen. It sure costs a lot, but Apple sure does know how to design a product. From their line of iPods and iMacs, the MacBook air will definitely turn heads when you put it out of the bag. Summer Movie Review 2008 # 2: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Yep. Indy’s back. 19 years after the last adventure, he’s back to deliver fun and thrills that we all missed from the previous trilogy. This time, we find our hero in the year 1957 being chased by a Russian sect wanting his help to find the Crystal Skull, a supposed magical artifact that could offer its finder power beyond all things.

First off, the acting. Everyone I thought was perfectly cast, along with Shia LeBeouf, which in my opinion is destined to be one of the biggest stars in the coming years. Harrison Ford is at its best, even at 65 years old, it’s good to know he can still handle kicks and punches like a pro. Karen Allen is great as always playing Marion, which incidentally is Indy’ first love interest. Cate Blanchett shines the movie’s prime villain. Her cool hairdo and fake Russian accent truly makes her a true actor capable of any role given to her. Supporting characters favored really well, though I felt John hurt’s character was a little underused.

For the story, it remains simple and straight. Though some of the narrative is pretty boring, the actions scenes are really fun. From the opening warehouse scene, which the Ark of the Covenant made its cameo from the Raiders of the Lost Ark to the jungle scenes, all the scenes reminded me of the old trilogy back when I was watching it as a child.

When director Steven Spielberg said that they wanted to stick to practical effects for the film, it felt that the CGI was too much. While it was impressive at parts, there seems to be something in the movies that felt really artificial. And without giving away spoilers, there was one scene in the jungles with Shia and the monkeys. I mean, what the hell was that? Sure there are some impossible things that were shown in the film, but I think they’ve gone too far.

While the main point of the story centers around the illusive Crystal Skulls, which technically has an origin that is out of this world (literally), it felt like something that not a typical Indiana Jones film. The movie sure had its moments, but overall it felt like a typical Hollywood film I’ve seen before – only that it IS Indiana Jones. People maybe rejoicing it’s comeback, but in the end I still miss the old days when movies don’t solely rely on special effects. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull: 7/10

Most Awaited Movie of 2008: The Dark Knight

Being a lover of films, a friend of mine has asked me, "What's your most awaited movie this 2008?" Sure, I had lots to answer. Especially now it's the summer season, a lot of blockbusters are now releasing in theaters. A lot of films pop into my mind. Iron Man, which I had recently seen or Speed Racer, another special effects extravaganza from the creators of the Matrix trilogy. Or probably the return of Indiana Jones, 19 years after the last movie was shown. There’s Wanted, wherein we see Angelina Jolie going back to doing badass action movies. Hellboy II The Golden Army is another venture into the world of the unknown from the visionary director Guillermo Del Toro, or another superhero film in the form of the Incredible Hulk, another attempt to reboot the Marvel comic book franchise after the less than great adaptation from Ang Lee, which now stars Edward Norton as the mean green machine. Or even venture back to the world of Narnia this time with Prince Caspian. These are just a few of the films I’m dying to see. But when you say most awaited, I only wanted to see one: Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.

The premise of this sequel is simple. Set within a year after the events of Batman Begins, Batman, Lieutenant James Gordon, and new district attorney Harvey Dent successfully begin to round up the criminals that plague Gotham City until a mysterious criminal mastermind known only as the Joker appears in Gotham, creating a new wave of chaos. Batman's struggle against the Joker becomes deeply personal, forcing him to "confront everything he believes" and improve his technology to stop him. A love triangle develops between Bruce Wayne, Dent and Rachel Dawes.

What I liked about the first film is how the director tried to humanize the characters, and the results was a gritty and dark adaptation of the character. I remember watching the first film on movie theaters about three to four times. I even bought two copies of it on DVD. Even my friends were amazed, especially on how real it conveyed the characters’ emotions and realizations on the decisions they make.

With Heath Ledger creating much buzz when he was found dead on his NYC apartment, this film makes it more interesting to watch. Apparently, he was so in character during the shoot that even in between takes, he scared out some crew members. One welcome addition to this film is the recast of Rachel Dawes to Maggie Gyllenhal. I admit Katie Holmes is the only one that appeared too average in the last film. Definitely the first day it shows here, I will be there lining up to be one of the first one to see this.

Happy Mother's Day

I was browsing my friend's blog and realized that Mother's Day is coming up tomorrow. So I'm giving a heartfelt greeting to the two moms I had in my life. Victoria Ortiz, my mom, who I had little time to spend with since I never grew up with her. But everytime I come to see her she gives me the love that mother should give to her child. yes, I'm a certified mama's boy. Hehe. I miss her 'caldereta'.

For my lola, who has been my second mom ever since she took me under her arms. she took care of me, dressed me up when going to school, bought me those expensive toys that only spoiled brats get. Thank You and I Love You.

This day we went to my uncle's place in Sharjah (an emirate of the UAE) to celebrate my Aunt's birthday. The food was good and it's been a long time since I had good 'Pinoy' food. How I miss home when I was eating breakfast, lunch and dinner. Now just in a few months I get to savor some of my lolo's home made cooking. After that, I asked my Tita if we could go to City Centre afterwards, which is like the 'SM' here in Dubai. 'pang-masa' as they say. Part of me earning my own money is that I get to buy stuff that I really want. And finally I get to buy my own flashy watch I get to show everyone. It's a Fossil-branded watch, which I had been eyeing for a long time. I was surprised to know it's priced lower than what I expected. So no questions asked, I immediately told my Tita that I wanted the watch. Plus, it's been months since I last bought my last fragrance, Armani Attitude. Now that it's almost out, I also decided to buy Hugo Boss Energise. The scent was simple yet enticing... hmm. Enticing. Seems it's the first I used that word in as an adjective. Hehe. This is reaping my rewards. At least I get to enjoy the fruits of my labor. Hmm, so what's next? A new notebook perhaps? Let's see.

Dubai Trippin'

The last work week was kinda hectic. First of all, I think I had less sleep during the past so I'm doing all the sleeping I need this weekend. Last week I accompanied my friend Irish to look for a bedspace so we went strolling around the Bur Dubai area. The first shot on the left is from the walkway near Burjuman, one of the 'high-class' malls here. Irish treated me to this waffle place (damn I forgot the name), and the waffles were really good. I had this waffle with mocha ice cream placed in top of it, drizzled with caramel. It was simply superb. I still had the taste of the caramel waffle staying in the mouth even even when I arrived home. The following day I had to attend this press conference, or a forum perhaps, about the latest technologies that are introduced in the last year. Speakers from Panasonic, Nokia and other big known companies have their own takes speaking in the forum. The forum was held at Madinat Jumeirah, all the way in the Jumeirah area, near the Burj Al Arab. I took a picture of the Jumeirah Beach Hotel (Yeah I know everything seems to be named Jumeirah), that's next to the Burj Al Arab. I also passed by the huge UAE flag in the area, and I remember Irish and me walking past the old villas and new ones being built, and you can see the new Dubai taking shape. This is such a facinating place. It's no wonder a lot of people, from all races flock to come here. Opportunities are great, and enough hard work would definitely get you to the top.

Year One

Today, May 7th, 2008 marks my first year here in the UAE. What have I accomplished so far?! A LOT! I work in a magazine where everyone knows me. I just got promoted and got a salary increase. Now every press conference being held must bear my name in their invite list. Life has never been better. I have caring friends, good colleagues and a family that loves me. What more could I ask for? I never though one year ago I'd be in a position like this. Let's celebrate!

Summer Movie Review 2008 # 1: Iron Man

Iron Man is 2008's first movie in a long line of summer blockbusters slated to come out in the following months. Good thing the film comes out a day earlier here in the UAE compared to its premiere in the US. The theatre was packed, but surprisingly, most of them were adults. I guess I'm not the only superhero geek in this country. The narrative was good, and immediately you are placed in action scenes you'd only see in a comic book. Robert Downey Jr. was perfectly cast as billionaire and genius Tony Stark. He played the part convincingly, definitely showcasing that his talent has not faded away. Gwyneth Paltrow makes a surprising comeback in this film, playing Tony's personal secretary and psedo-love Pepper Potts. While she graves the screen as always with her films, I felt her character is a bit underused, but I guess Director Jon Favreau (who also has a small role in the film) didn't want to make her another damsel in distress. Terrence Howard was cast a military officer and good friend to Tony Stark and a welcome additon to the great cast. The villain, played by Jeff Bridges seems to look like a chiche with all other villians in films. The monolouging and self-praises sometimes gets too much. The action scenes were superb and visual effects looked so real it seemed it were happnening in real time. It's good to see a normal guy turn into a superhero without any help from a spider bite or even cosmic radiation - he turns into one becuase he just wants to. Seems to look like Bruce Wayne-ish to me, but that's another story. All in all, it was a fun and exciting ride. This is one of the better superhero films to come out this year (After the good yet too melodramatic Spider-Man 3 last year). They've definitely crafted a nice movie here and judging by the way the scene goes after the end credits, I guess we will see more of Iron Man in the future. Iron Man: 8/10

Tech Pulse Online # 1: Combating Piracy

“Downloading pirated films is stealing” these are the words that show on the screen before watching a movie on the theatre or even before you play any original DVD. These people keep informing us that buying pirated products is stealing. Their raids and investigations led to some wondering if they’re doing something illegal or not - which almost half not knowing they’re unconsciously sharing a file for everyone to download, or copying a film or a software illegally so they could use for other purposes. On the other side, some people still support these pirated products – not knowing they were illegal copies in the first place.

According to the Arabian Anti Piracy Alliance website, more than 2 million counterfeit discs consisting mainly of movies and software have been seized just in the last year. Also, about 15 pirates have been jailed for illegal production of such materials. Good thing is that the Alliance now has various offices in the Middle East, including the UAE which secretly monitor places here and arrest those who are responsible for these acts.

But why do some still support piracy? Probably one good reason is that it is cheaper. Honestly, would you spend about 1400 AED just for a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate? While it’s really not advisable to deter into these options, one can’t really help but think practically on how one could save money. The downside is that, it’s illegal.

Another probable reason is that in relation to films, pirates can get hold of screener or work print copies of movies. These copies are released by the studios themselves, which are then given to award-giving bodies for review. There are also ‘screener’ copies, which are intended mostly for screening for the critics. Funny thing is, somehow at least one gets in the hands pirates and all is history. Such things are also common on the internet and once you place something in the internet, it’s hard to delete it.

Since most films are only released on DVD after about a period of 3-5 months, most people prefer downloading these content or buying bootleg copies of it. Additionally, with the high prices of cinema tickets not only here but in the other countries, most would prefer watching in the comfort of their own homes.

With the recent advancements in technology, most have already began copying movies from Blu ray and the now defunct HD DVD discs. These discs claim they have the most advanced copy protection available, but yet some were still able to penetrate through this secure protection.

In a recent statement made by Patrick Hayati, McAfee Regional Director for Middle East and Mediterranean, he has mentioned that software piracy is a very serious problem in the Middle East, and that’s why McAfee loses about 40 to 50 per cent of its revenues because of piracy.

Still, the success of pirates would depend on how consumers would support them. If these companies can provide low-cost legit copies of softwares and/or films, then consumers may see the white light and ultimately decide that the original is always the best. This in turn, would hopefully create a trend in which consumers would stop buying pirated products, which would make the pirates make a run for their money.

For the longest time I have had this craving for Strawberry Pop Tarts. For those who have no idea what Pop Tarts are (and I believe there are only a few): A Pop-Tart is a flat rectangular toaster pastry approximately 3 inches (7.6 cm) by 5.5 inches (14 cm) made by the Kellogg Company. Pop-Tarts have a sugary filling sealed inside two layers of rectangular, thin pastry crust; each layer of this crust is about 0.1 inches (2.5 mm) thick. Most varieties have frosting, but some do not. They can be eaten without being warmed, but are often warmed inside a toaster. Recently, certain varieties have been marketed as tasting best when left to cool in the freezer. They are usually sold in pairs inside foil packages, and do not require refrigeration. [Source: Wikipedia] I haven't seen any Pop Tarts yet here in Dubai, but some say there are some in some shops. Guess it'll be like a treasure hunt before I find one of these sweet delicacies. How I iwsh I have one here right in my hand and muching my way to nirvana.

As most of you all know by now, I'm a gadget freak. Aside from collecting DVDs and if I have extra money, I like collecting gadgets that are not only unique but also makes a good fashion statement. Haha! And I never thought I’d be a fashionable person. First off, I finally got a PlayStation Portable Slim and Lite… it was a ‘gift’ from my editor. Now, my only task is to buy games for it.

I also finally got to upgrade my mobile phone. Since buying a K750i last April 4, 2006 (exactly two years ago), I am now a big fan of Sony Ericsson. One of their latest models in the Walkman phone series is the W880i, a slim yet feature-packed mobile phone. I’m really happy with my purchase, since now I’ve got a fancy new gadget to show everyone. Hehe!

Dubai Festival City

With all the shopping malls around Dubai, it’s really getting dull seeing another one get built. So last week before attending the Panasonic event I had to go to, I passed by Dubai Festival City – another shopping mall near the area of Al Gharoud here in Dubai. While I was expecting shops and food courts everywhere, I was surprised because the mall is not designed for shopping but for relaxing. There were fountains and tress everywhere inside the mall. Even the roof was designed to let the sun shine through. It was definitely relaxing. Coupled with a nice mocha frappucino at my side, it was a good way to start the day.

Sailing at Ras Al Khaimah

Last week I had the privilege to be invited by Panasonic to join a snorkeling session in time for the launch of their new line of waterproof cameras. The launch was held at Ras Al Khaimah at Al Hamra Fort Hotel. It was my first time to travel to the emirate so I was all excited, but I didn’t get the chance to join the water activities since I was not feeling well at the time. Even if I didn’t get to snorkel, I still had fun sailing along the Arabian Gulf. I guess it would be even more fun if I’m with my friends and family. The sun was great and the sea was breezy. For a moment there, I didn’t even realize that summer is coming already. As a way to document our adventures, Panasonic let us use their cameras and then they let us take home the SD cards to show to everyone. It was a great day. Afterwards, I didn’t realize that the day is almost done and before you know it, I’m making my way back to Dubai again. It’s one of those experiences worth remembering.

Movie Review: The Eye (Remake)

In the endless string of Hollywood remakes, another movie suddenly shows up in our midst. The Eye stars Jessica Alba, which in my opinion still looks hot as always, even when blind. In the film , she plays a blind musician who gets a cornea transplant. This in turn makes her see things out of the ordinary - then she suddenly learns that the former owner of her eyes has a certain ability to see the dead. While the premise was good, the movie however lacks certain substance and plot that we usually look for a horror. Or maybe if you're someone who just enjoys thrills and scares, then you might possibly enjoy. If not for the stunning Jessica Alba, I would have never watched this film. The Eye (Remake): 5/10

Movie Review: Shutter (Remake)

I first heard of the movie Shutter by my friend Onch, who has a thing for watching Asian movies. Since I had no other else to watch that time, I prepped up myself and watched the original 'Shutter' movie from Thailand. To my surprise, I got creeped out and truly enjoyed the film. That was 2004, now another American remake finds its way in the theaters. While it provided good out-of-your-seat moments and good scares, the original, in my opinion is still the best. One thing I find irritating is that why they always find Japan is the subtle setting for these kinds of films. I guess for them the Asians are the most scariest. Nearly every shot of the film is like the original, even the twist in the end. It's a good watch, but it's not worth watching again. Shutter (Remake): 5/10

Paintball

Last Thursday, I had the chance of joining my colleagues in a game of Paintball organized by our company as a means of relaxing and having fun for their employees. Heading over near Dubai Creek for the game, we immediately dressed up and started heading to our designated sides to start the game. There were three games: one was to shoot all opponents, second is we must take a white flag and take it our enemies’ base and lastly a game involves protecting our ‘king’ from getting shot. The first game went well, until I got caught and I had to surrender. The last two games were a blur. Even if I was all ready to shoot all the way, my googles keep fogging up, that's why I spent most of my time wiping them. Grr. Anyways, there's always a second time. After the game we had a little eat out, but I spent most of my time taking pictures with my colleagues. Here's some of them:

Work was pretty heavy this month. Aside from doing my monthly 'TechPulse' column, I have 43 product reviews to finish. I'm not complaining or anything... I'm simply overwhelmed by the amount of work I have to finish. But it's ok, I'm halfway through. Lately, all i have done is simply go to work, then home then work again. While some may think I may be losing my mind due to excessive working, the fact is I love what I do and that's the good thing, right?! I also can't wait to have my first vacation back to the Philippines since leaving last May 2007. I'll again be bombarded by relatives who keeps on expecting gifts that I apparently should have for them - not that I'm buying them - "Ano ka, sineswerte?".

I was a bit hesitant at first since I had no idea how to handle a gun but i realized since I'm experiencing everything for the first time, might as well join the crowd - and I'm glad I did. We were shooting clay piegeons while it was thrown in the air. I thought someone must know precision and timing when doing it, and that only a shsarpshooter at heart can know how to do it. At first every shot of the bullet makes me even more nervous, but after a few tries (which I didn't get to shoot anything) I finally get one shot right. We had two rounds: Round one was the practice, with 25 shots. Round two was another 25 shots but now it is scored. I ended up shooting 18 targets out of 25. In tie with me is my collague Hatim, which also got 18 points. My editor Chris was in 3rd place. I really had fun. I never knew that this activity would release a lot of in me. It's a great way to relax and it feels even better now that I've finished everything I need to do for the magazine. After that we had hefty dinner at T.G.I. Friday's at Sheik Zayed Road. I had the most juicy beef steak (well-done), the creamiest mashed potatoes, the freshest graden salad and the most electrifying blue lemonade. It was a great day to end the day. Much thanks to Vadim for the invite. Not only it was relaxing, it was a good experience that'll definitely do again.

Movie Review: Cloverfield

It's been a while since I've seen a movie in the theater (I usually download or copy films from my colleagues now). But since I've found extra time to spend I decided to watch a film that's worth watching - and I think Cloverfield was it. Ever since I saw the teaser from Transformers last year... It really got me interested. Plus, being a fan of Lost and Alias definitely got me itchin' to see this film (Creator of Lost and Alias J.J. Abrams produced and 'pitched' the idea for the film). Though the film got me a little nauseous, it somewhat reminded me of 9/11, with all the torn buildings and panic in the streets. The movie was very effective in detailing accounts of the people involved in the film. It really gave you the feeling of fear - just like everyone in the film. As with every J.J. Abrams-related feature, reminiscent of Lost - clues and related stuff are popping in the film. From the 'Slusho' drink on one of the character's shirts - to the Dharma Initiative logo just before the film started. Even with the film's premise and trailer, the execution was perfect. While some find the concept of the film too shallow, I loved every part of it. It gave me this feeling of euphoria everytime I watch films, which I haven't experienced in a long time. Immediately one fo my favorite movies of the 2008. By the way, if some of you folks still have no idea what the 'monster' looks like, below is a tiny clip of one scene from the film. Work, Home and Sleep

Wah! Work has been hard these past few days, with deadlines and pending reviews all over. Good thing Irish (PC Magazine's Staff Writer) is there to join me in my days when I (err, I mean We) get wacky. It's hard to find true people in this place, and I'm glad I found friends like her (Insert WooHooHoo comment here).

My grandparents recently wenk to the Philippines last weekend. They sure have missed 'Pinas' since they've spend the entire Christmas season in the United Kingdom. Dropping them off to the airport made me feel a little envious of everyone leaving, which made realize that it's almost time for me to plan my first vacation back home since entering the crazy world of being an OFW.

Which leads me to another random thought: Why in the world people from other countries mistake this place (Dubai, UAE) as a place of war? Sometimes people just assume places in general. With all the ongoing war and violence in neighboring countries here in the gulf, people always assume the entire Middle East is in that status - which is not. A thought comes to mind when my cousin asked me if there are terrorists here in Dubai or if I have met Bin Laden... It;s Dubai, people... Not Afganistan. For pete's sake, read a map... It isn't that hard to understand. Lastly, Dubai is not a country ok? It's a city/emirate... and it's part of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

I can't wait to go home. I have lots of errands to finish when I get there and when I'm finally done, my time's up and I have to go back. Sometimes I'd wish that if only I had the same salary and position back in the Philippines, it would be much better... But I guess you can't have it all.

Even though I left the call center business because I can't get much sleep. I still deprived of sleep working here - waking up at 4:50am and sleeping at 10pm. Well, as I said, you can't have it all.

Wow it's 2008 already and all I can think of is the upcoming movie summer season... all those films... wow. Batman. The Joker. Indiana Jones. Narnia. I can't wait.

But seriously, I plan to have 2008 to be my year that I can reach more goals and achieve more of what I have reached now. I think I can do that... since 2007 was a great year for me. I'm now in a supposed happy and satisfying place in my life and I couldn't ask for more... for now. ;-)

While admittedly some these films are blunders and/or potential blockbusters, they are the films that made me excited when watching it in the theater and heavily anticipated them on DVD. Let the countdown begin.

10. Grindhouse (Planet Terror/Death Proof) - Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's double feature was a definite must watch for me. While it bombed at the box-office, it's intense action and over the top gore makes it a worthy addition to my fave films.

9. Hairspray - I have soft side for musicals. I loved each scene that went into this film... and seeing John Travolta in drag is a plus.

8. Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End - Though the running time was almost clocked in at 3 hours, it was pure fun and thrills in the last (?) chapter of the Pirates trilogy.

7. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - Harry's 5^thyear at Hogwarts were met with inevitable chaos when Lord Voldemort, err... He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named begins to silently wreak havoc on the wizarding world. With superb performances by Imelda Staunton and Helena Bonham Carter, this is surely a must-see.

6. The Bourne Ultimatum - I'm really not a fan of films like these. However, since seeing the 2^ndfilm, I was attached to the film. In the 3^rdfilm, which supposedly is the end of the Bourne series, finds Jason Bourne on track to find the reason why people are pissed with him. Fueled with non-stop action, this film adds a satisfying finale to a great trilogy.

5. 300 - Frank Miller's graphic novel about 300 Spartans that went against all odds against their enemies of a million in count. Gore and epic action ensures. Plus, memorable lines that shall not be forgotten: "This is SPARTA!" or "SPARTANS! Tonight we dine in hell!"

4. Ratatouille - Pixar never fails to amuse us with simple storylines with heart. A story of a rat who wants to become a chef is the focus of their latest offering. Superb animation and touching moments make this one of the best animated films of the year.

3. Spider-Man 3 - While I'm die-hard Spider-Man movie fan, I was disappointed with the 3^rd film. There's too much storylines to be told and the villains were too blunt. Still, the epic action sequences make up for it. While it may not be the best, I still like it.

2. Die Hard 4.0 (Live Free or Die Hard) - Ah, even old age cannot stop John McClane in preventing terrorists from messing with the U.S. of A. Filled with thrilling car chases and stunts and explosions, along with Willis' signature line, this is simply a must-watch.

1. Transformers - Being a fan of the toy line and the cartoon, I almost cannot sleep the night before this movie opened. While some critics may bash the storyline and Michael Bay's directing, I still loved the film. After all, it's the robots I'm interested in seeing.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone! I can't believe 2007 is almost over! But I must say, this is one of my favorite years. Never have I accomplished so much things this year. I finally decided to leave my call center job (which is no offense, I really hated), I found a job abroad that I really, really loved. I'm finally on track and somewhat know what I want in the future. Thanks to my Tita, who pulled all the stops to help me on each step I take. Thanks to my 'tatay' and 'nanay', who have given me all the guidance that I will ever need. Thanks to my family, which somehow became the sole reason why I'm doing all of these. Thanks to my barkada (ANI!) which never forgot me even we were far apart. Raissa, Beans, Noel, Nat, Onch, FJ, Bebang, Shayne and Foxy. Thanks to Densie, who has always been there for me. To Jeah, even though we're continents apart, still lets me feel the comfort of having a true friend. To Glai, whose mystery still bedazzles me, thanks for the great advices. December 17th marks my 23rd birthday. It's my first birthday here in Dubai. It was fun, we got to eat outside and I got a blueberry cheesecake from my Tita. While I still miss home, I think I'll survive. It's a good way to start the Eid Holidays... So 5 days of doing nothing! (woohoo?!). I recently was receiving text messages from my friends in the Philippines about a housemaid named "Inday", who apparently knows more about the English language than any UP College professor knows about. Her quick wits and uber-precise and carefully chosen English words and explanations were enough to give someone a nosebleed. The text craze following Inday's adventures and lovelife and even with here bitter rival, "Ederlyn" has sparked curiosity on Filipinos all over the globe, who eagerly await Inday's next nose-bleeding quote.

Recently, a friend of mine showed this blog: Blog ni Inday, which documents all text messages and stories by the famed housemaid. While some may find it corny or over-acting at times, it's where I find a small amount of smiles and laughters whenever I'm lonely. Recently, the Probe Team aired an episode chronicling Inday's impact for Filipinos everywhere (video below this post).

I remember that I used to ask my 'lola' to buy me this snack. Yan-yan are stick biscuits that you dip in rich milk chocolate. The moment I saw this on the store, I immediately bought one in excitement. The child in me suddenly came out (as witnessed by my eating buddy Irish). I loved eating every piece and slowly eating the remaining chocolate dip. It was satisfying! Guess I'll have more trips to the supermarket looking for this one... :-)

I never knew Dubai had winters. Well, technically it doesn't snow. But still the season is getting pretty cold... even in the afternoon. This picture was taken when I was on my way to work. It's actually a chilly 19 degrees! At least it's a good thing. I was thinking if i was back in the Philippines, christmas lights were already lined up on the streets, with 'parols' everywhere. Happy Halloween everyone! This halloween, instead of dressing up in a costume and knocking doors at my neighborhood saying "trick or treat" (which I know I'm too old to do), I'll instead immerse myself on watching scary movies. Here some of my picks for the best films to watch on All Hallow's Eve. Some of you may argue on some of the films I placed on this list, but these are my favorites. If you have any violent reactions, let’s take it out to the parking lot (kidding!). Bring out the popcorn and have one hell of a night!

Exhibit A: The Classics

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

“Hello, Clarice…” those are the chilling words that came out of the mouth of infamous cannibal Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) while speaking to FBI agent Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster). Overall the film may not be as scary as you think, but seeing Hannibal’s eyes stare blankly at you just is just plain creepy.

Scariest scene: When Clarice discovers what’s inside the jar.

Halloween (1978)

A deranged 6 year-old-boy kills her older sister. Boy was locked away in a sanitarium. After 15 years, boy gets out, wields a large butcher knife and starts murdering babysitters – all on All Hollow’s Eve. Halloween was one of the best slasher films I’ve seen. John Carpenter’s classic was one of the few horror movies that are really scary.

Scariest scene: When Laurie shouts out for Tommy as Michael is approaching.

Poltergeist (1982)

Imagine you build your dream house on a sacred Indian burial ground. Definitely you’re bound to see spirits in no time. This disturbing tale of the supernatural really was so scary, even the real actors died a couple of months after shooting the film, which makes it even creepier.

Scariest scene: When the little girls stared at the TV and said, “They’re here”

The Exorcist (1978)

The devil really is a scary being. In this film it manages to turn innocent young Regan into a deranged demon from hell. I actually was praying when watching this.

Scariest Scene: The spider-walk stairway descent (Available only on “The Version You’ve Never Seen”)

The Omen (1976)

What if the 6 year old boy you had was actually the spawn of Satan?! The Omen may not offer edge of your seat thrills, but thinking that a little boy is capable of doing nasty deaths is enough is to get you scared.

Scariest Scene: When Damien’s nanny commits suicide on his 6^th birthday.

Carrie (1976)

This film taught me not to make fun of overly serious geeks in school. They might turn out to have telekinesis and might just kill you on your prom. Ah, imagine all that blood on my tux!

Scariest Scene: What else?! The prom scene!

Jaws (1975)

A then unknown Steven Spielberg made a splashing debut with his little fish film. Haha! And you thought it was safw to go back to the water.

Scariest Scene: Not much of the scene, but just the theme itself, “dum, dum” is scary.

Evil Dead (1981)

Before Sam Raimi went to direct Spider-Man, he had his own superhero, and his name was Ash. A mix of sublime comedy amidst a horror background, this is one of the cult classics that’s a definite must watch.

Scariest Scene: When they start reading from the Book of the Dead and… well, you know what happens next.

Alien (1979)

Director Ridley Scott’s film was thought to be another sci-fi movie ala Star Wars. But no, enter a large spaceship (with claustrophobic surroundings), a then unknown Sigourney Weaver in the lead, and a face-hugging, chest-bursting alien on the loose, and you’ve got yourself a 2 hour scare ride from start to finish.

Scariest Scene: When the alien bloodily bursts out of Kane’s chest.

Exhibit B: The Remakes

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)

This is one of the few remakes I actually liked. The scares were there and all gore that you can possibly imagine. Plus, you get to experience Jessica Biel’s boo-tay. (I can’t believe I just said that)

Scariest Scene: When Erin hides inside a meat processing plant (inside a dead animals carcass) to escape from Leatherface.

Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Ah, Zack Snyder’s remake of the George Romero classic was truly one of the zombie films I really enjoyed. Trapped in mall with the dead lurking outside, you can’t help but fell safe that your favorite coffee shop is still in tact.

Scariest Scene: When Ana sees the chaos in the streets and realizes what’s going on.

The Ring (2002)

Though many still love the original Japanese movie, I still dug this remake. Naomi Watts really was a good choice for the lead. This movie reminded me not to accommodate calls that says “seven days” in a whispered voice.

Scariest Scene: When dear old Samara comes out of the TV.

Exhibit C: The Modern Thrillers

Se7en (1995)

This story follows a two detective on a route to catch a serial killer that tortures his victims according to the seven deadly sins. And I never imagined Kevin Spacey to be this bad.

Scariest Scene: When Brad Pitt discovers what’s inside the box.

The Blair Witch Project (1999)

This mock documentary about three filmmakers who are on a search about a local urban myth caused quite a stir when it was released back in 1999. Although none of it was true, it still sends chills down my spine every time I see this film.

Scariest Scene: The ending… “what was that?”

Exhibit D: All time favorite

The Scream Trilogy (1996, 1997, 2000)

Wes Craven’s horror movie about a bunch of movie crazed teenagers stalked by movie crazed serial killer gained positive reaction and ultimately the horror genre. Writer Kevin Williamson’s edgy script combined thrills and weird tongue-in-cheek situations that spawned 2 more sequels. A definite watch for everyone.

Scariest Scene: When Drew Barrymore died in the opening scene. I mean, who kills a major character in the opening scene?

Movie Review: Resident Evil Extinction

Resident Evil may be one of those films harshfully bashed by critics, but still one of those that people truly enjoy watching. I think the first movie was good, and the second movie was better (though that fight scene with the shaking cameras truly gave me a headache). Extinction continues from Apocalypse, with the whole troop moving through desert-ridden Las Vegas. A bunch of new characters are introduced, though noticeable is the absence of Jill Valentine. Where is she? What happened to her? Ah well, maybe they didn't pay her enough. Anyways, the story was still the usual. But the action scenes are good. The film may be shallow, but there's something in the RE series that's still very watchable. Still, a good movie to pass time by. The ending screams out for another sequel, but I think that would be a much better story. *SPOILERS* ahead: I can't wait seeing RE's version of Attack of the Clones... Hehe. Resident Evil Extinction: 7/10

Traffic is too much here in Dubai that normally the time it takes for me to go my work (which is about 10 minutes) takes about an hour and a half, and that's if you've been able to catch a bus...

Public transport here is so irregular, and that's the only I hate about this place. I just hope something can be done. And knowing Dubai, I'm sure they'll find solutions and deliver results immediately.

And yes, I leave that early. My work starts at 9am... and I leave my place at 6am, just to evade the traffic. It seems that they've gotten obsessed in developing this city that its turning into one big construction site. Are they that excited? What can I do, I'm just an expat here trying to make a living...

This quotation is one of those funny lines made my friends. He was actually meaning to start his sentence with “In general” but somehow ended up writing “Imburnal (Sewage canal)”. Ah, those were the college days.

However, I asked myself the question; “In general”… what do I feel right now? It’s like answering a better part of an interview. Well, working here was a blast. I had fun meeting a WHOLE lot of wonderful people. But besides that, I still miss home. I know some of you may say that I have a wonderful opportunity here. But it seems for the last 4 months I’ve been missing home so terribly. I guess it’s too early to tell right now what I feel. Probably I’ll just spend these next few months looking blankly at my computer screen and decide if all of these would ultimately be worth it. Others may say that you really have to sacrifice everything but I guess I’m really not that patient. “Blame it on the milkman” as they say.

I know it’s not yet the weekend but I am now actually very tired and can’t wait for Friday! Last week my grandparents came here in Dubai for a short vacation before going on a 3-month stay at the UK. It was great seeing them again.

For the past week we’ve been constantly on the move, going to malls and eating out, treating ‘tatay’ and ’nanay’ for a quick trip around the city. But it was tiring. Now that everything seems to be back to normal, I am now feeling tired and sleepy due to last week’s hectic ‘agenda’…

GITEX Technology Week 2007

GITEX, or Gulf Technology Exhibition 2007, was held in the Dubai World Trade Centre last September 8-12, 2007 in the heart of the city. It was my first time to attend such conferences/exhibitions. The thing that got me excited is that all of the top manufacturers will be showcasing their newest products. It was actually very tiring, but what I discovered (as I am part of the media and has to interview people for the magazine), I got to meet a lot of people. It was really fun, at first you would think that these people (some of them were General Managers and Managing Directors) were all about serious… but no, every one of them was fun and upbeat in their interviews. I was really glad I met them. And I saw a whole lot of new LCDs, PDAs, and mobile phones. And the best part of being a media? Freebies! I got a whole lot of stuff from GITEX 2007… Wow, I think I’ll definitely be coming back next year. Here are a couple of shots:

Rob Zombie’s Halloween

Ever since watching Scream, I’ve developed a liking for horror (particularly slasher) movies. And I think everyone will agree that Halloween is still the best among the lot. John Carpenter’s 1978 film did what others can’t: it made you actually scared - not because of sudden frights and loud music, but with the actual notion that Michael Myers could be real. And now that Rob Zombie has a new Halloween film that he calls a ‘re-imagining’ of the first film, I actually am excited with this… (even though some die hard fans hate the idea of remakes) Just recently I found a workprint version of the film, meaning the film isn’t finalized yet, and some scenes may or may not be in the final theatrical cut. Well, I better watch this now, just to see which one is better. Time to get my popcorn… (cue creepy Halloween theme)… dum dum dum...

Movie Review: The Bourne Ultimatum

This is usually the type of film I’d only watch once. But seeing it as a trilogy finally makes sense. By far its one of the best movies that I’ve seen this year. The 3^rd movie ties up all the loose ends that were left unanswered in the first 2 films. Matt Damon was great as always, and never did I think that the he was able to do action. The pacing was great, and the action? Wow, it was really exhilarating. The storyline was also good and Joan Allen was at her best again, supporting actors like Julia Stiles definitely made this film a definite must watch. The Bourne Ultimatum: 8/10

The irregularities of public transport

Wow I never realized I’d let week pass by without posting a blog entry. I immersed myself at work, keeping myself busy with reviewing things and at the same time enjoying what I do. Yesterday though was a hassle, not because of work, but due to the time I spent waiting for a bus to go home. Imagine this: I went out at exactly 5:10pm, so I may be able to catch the 5:30pm bus (I still have to walk a long way to the bus stop). To my surprise, not even one bus (that passes through my home) came by… and it’s already pass 7pm. Wow! I never imagined to wait that long! Finally, I just decided to walk, thinking I would arrive at my destination faster than any vehicles around… (Even if you got on a bus, intense traffic will still cost you more time). This is the only thing I hate about this place, the irregularity of public transport. The RTA said they would want people to consider alternate modes of transport, but how can people adjust to that scheme if we would spend hours just waiting for a bus. Now, they’ve tried reasoning that the Dubai Metro is on its way to becoming a reality… but that is still a few years away. Additionally, I can now take a tour of the city free with every bus ride. Why? Due to the enormous detours the bus has to take. I mean, why is everyone in a hurry to develop this city? They want Dubai to be a major tourist destination in the Middle East, they keep populating this place. *Sigh* I just wish something could be done immediately.

2007 has been a year of sequels and three-quels. Filipino moviegoers today are much influenced by Hollywood films, even preferring to watch them instead of movies that are our own. But now, it seems Pinoy films are already reaping in the box office, thanks to wide publicity, creative production, and most notably, a decent plot. At least Spider-Man 3 is still at top... while it wouldn't hurt if Transformers became number 1.

My first Krispy Kreme

I never had the chance to taste the Krispy Kreme doughnut. All I know is that it is Homer Simpson’s favorite. Before, Krispy Kreme branches were only in the US, and I have already left when it opened in the Philippines.

Now I get to taste it for the first time here in Dubai. Wow, it tasted really, really good. I’m not saying that because everyone says it is. But it is really that delicious. Wish I could have more…. Well, everything comes at a price. Each doughnut costs about 4.50 Dirhams… that amounts to about 60 pesos per doughnut. (What?!)

Weekend Movie Marathon: Part Deux

Despite the weird occurrences that happened this weekend, I still got to enjoy a few movies that I didn’t get to see in the theaters.

28 Weeks Later – I actually thought the first one was good. So now I expected a lot from this sequel. The good thing is, I actually enjoyed it. There definitely some jump out moments. But what I liked was the movie’s ability to let you care for the main characters. The story was clichéd, yet still unique. I really enjoyed watching it. 28 Weeks Later: 8/10

Hot Fuzz – I’m a big fan of Shaun of the Dead. I never knew talents like Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright existed. They’re one of the most funny and creative people on the planet. The story is simple, yet very entertaining. This is of those films I’d love to buy on DVD to watch over and over again. Hilariously funny! Hot Fuzz: 9/10

Frustrations and pressures

Did you ever get that feeling that everything you do is always wrong? Or that every itsy bitsy tiny mistake you make seems to be something that you committed serious? Well, it was a weird weekend for me.

I don’t know, but for some reason I got scolded a lot. There was a time when I was just sitting down to eat, and then I was told that I didn’t get the water for drinking. After that, I was told that how am I going to survive living by myself if I can’t even get a bottle of water. Shocked that I am, I tried to explain, but I thought explaining myself would only make matters worse.

Another was when we were buying groceries. The moment we came back, I just turned on the TV. Just tried to see what’s on it (as most people do). Again I was told that here I am again trying to watch TV when I should be helping with the unpacking of the groceries. Well, actually I am going to help, and I just turned on the TV. Guess that was a big mistake.

Since then, Every move I make is a careful one. Awkward as it sounds, I am now actually afraid. I don’t know what happened; probably I was just caught in one of its mood swings…

Also, I might add. Once you’ve committed a mistake or did something really, really, wrong (for them at least). People would make it a point to remind you of that mistake every day. Even if you say that you actually did not do anything wrong, you can’t defend yourself, because you didn’t say anything. In the first place if you actually said something and started defending yourself… It’s not worth it. You’ll only be able to hear more scolding.

And then probably days after, when you finally get the guts to say it, just to be open and honest… Dismissal is only what you’ll get. You’ll either be told again that you are too sensitive… saying that it was only a small thing and you should probably dismiss it or be scolded again yet for another reason you can’t seem to understand.

So now you can get a grasp of what I feel right now. I’m not mad, just shocked that despite doing my best and trying to suppress my feelings (I’m feeling very homesick), I guess that just isn’t enough… and probably you know now why I don’t tell such things… Pressures really arise when people expect so much from you. You have to try and let them see you can do it… even if you really, really, can’t.

From dreams to nightmares...

Last night, I had those dreams where it went from a nice little dream to some people say a ‘nightmare’. I guess this is the stuff horror movies are made of, and I think I ought to share it with you guys.

My family and I were going on a skiing trip (even though I’ve never seen snow in my entire life). It was great dream; I get to spend a nice quality time with my family. We were then staying in this wooden cottage near the mountains and have a comfy fireplace. I was dressing up in PJ’s and immediately went to bed. I woke up suddenly in the middle of the night and heard a tip-toeing sound, as if like someone was walking in the hallway outside of out room. It couldn’t be anyone from my family as they were all fast asleep with me in the room.

Then I just saw the door of our room open slowly, but I couldn’t see anything. Feeling a little afraid now, I remained in my bed and hid under the covers. Then I tried to see what it is. From my bed, lying down, I saw a top of a head. I could only see the top of the head because it seemed like it was crawling towards me. Somehow I didn’t feel any fear… until it went up my bed and saw her face. Yes, it was a girl. She actually reminded me of the creepy ghost woman crawling down the stairs from the Grudge movie. I saw her face, it was lifeless. Her lips were white and she just blankly stared at me. Then she suddenly grabbed my throat and started choking it. I couldn’t scream or even move. Deep in my sleep I just wished I would wake up.

And then I did, good thing my tita didn’t notice me. I was actually panting and breathing heavily. I went to go drink a glass of water. It was creepy. I never had a dream like that before. And it definitely scared me. It was 3:30am, and from that moment I just closed my eyes and tried to sleep again. I wish I wouldn’t have a dram like that again. I still get chills when I remember that dream.

Review: The Simpsons Movie

I really am not a die-hard Simpsons fan. But every once in a while, I find myself watching the series on TV. I can't believe its a;ready been running for 18 years! Well, I guess now they've cashed in on the franchise by making the inevitable "Simpsons Movie". The plot is simple, with Homer placing Springfield in jeopardy after he pollutes the river with his 'pig crap' silo. Which in turn makes the American Government place Springfield in a huge glass dome. While the story was overly shallow, I still found my self laughing at some scenes. It indeed was very funny. Everyone on the casts still gives life to each of the yellow-colored characters. All in all, I had fun watching the film. But I guess it wouldn't make any difference if this were a one-hour special episode. The Simpsons Movie: 7/10

Spider-Man 4 news...

I really thought the franchise is done after part 3. Though I was somewhat disappointed with part 3 and thought the trilogy was okay, I'm a bit excited if they ever plan to make another Spider-Man film. Well, here's what director Sam Raimi can say so far:

""I want to help contribute to the production," he said. "I don't know if I'll just be a producer on it but if I can work with the writer in such a way so that directing would be right for me, I don't know...."

Will he come back as a director? I hope so.

Book Review: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

After 6 days I finally finished the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. My reactions? It was great! It was actually very thrilling from the moment you read the first chapter up until it ends. J.K. Rowling definitely made Harry Potter’s world seem so real that even reading it would take you to the action. A lot of deaths happened, but I really think they were necessary. I also loved how all characters and places came full circle on this book. Really, really good! The only negative thing I would like to comment about is that the Epilogue was somewhat ‘cheesy’. I liked it, but somehow there was something in the writing on that epilogue that makes it like tasteless. Anyways, I really liked it. And this is easily one of the best books in the series (after Prisoner of Azkaban, of course.) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: 8.5/10

Weekend Movie Marathon

This past weekend I got the chance to have a movie marathon. Since I’m quite lazy to go out (and it’s hot), I decided to watch the following films instead. Some are new but some have been released a few months back. Still, I got the chance to watch and review them. Since I never really watched them in the theater, I guess they really don’t deserve a lengthy, single blog entry.

Evan Almighty – I remember this film didn’t do well at the box office. But still, I actually was laughing the whole time. Steve Carrell indeed was funny. But between Jim Carrey and him, I’d still choose Jim. A nice comedy that’s worthy of a rental. Evan Almighty: 7/10

Vacancy – I actually didn’t like the film when I saw its trailer, but somehow it was actually better than I expected. Some clichés are present, but overall it was a fun watch – fun, but forgettable. Vacancy: 6/10

Disturbia – I actually wanted to watch this film due to its success at the box office and some nice reviews. When I did, it was actually good. It was thrilling with an added sense of humor. Worthy of everyone’s attention. 8/10

Click – now this was the film I failed to watch at the cinemas and had second thoughts on buying it on DVD. The movie was funny and endearing, but that’s about it. It was nothing special, the usual Adam Sandler comedy with a drama bit in the end. A good family film, though. Click: 6/10

Mr. Brooks – I’m not really into these kinds of films, but I gave it a chance. Story was typical, and has been used dozens of times. Kevin Costner’s acting was good, but his alter ego (William Hurt) actually did better. Demi Moore’s performance was actually better than Costner’s. Forgettable film. Mr. Brooks: 6/10

I guess the only summer film I haven’t seen so far was Shrek the Third... yet. It’s not that I didn’t get the chance to see it, but I just lost interest on the Shrek films after Shrek 2.

Review: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

I have seen the last four Harry Potter movies on its first day of showing. Now that I am here in Dubai, I wouldn’t ruin my record. Hehe. I read the 5^th book about December 2004, and if I am not mistaken it is the longest book in the series. I also think it is one of the darkest. Now, I initially had my doubts with the film when I saw it’s 2-hour, 18-minute running time. For a book that long, will they be able to fit all the necessary events in the book with that runtime? I watched the film with high anticipation, and upon seeing the opening titles, I joyfully clapped along with the excited audience. The movie was very dark, reminiscent of Prisoner of Azkaban. The main plot is that Harry must prove to everyone that Voldemort (er, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named) is back, and is now wielding a war against all who would not follow him. As always, the main actors continue to grow into their roles. While the writer tries to keep everything at a nice pacing, there are some scenes included that were not fully explained. I guess only readers of the book would actually know the full sense of that scene. One for example, was Percy’s (Ron’s older brother) appearance with the Minister of Magic. It was never explained why he was with the Minister, and why on Christmas he wasn’t with the Weasley family. With all that aside, I think it is a wonderful film. Audiences would mostly admire Harry’s first love, and also witnessing his first kiss. Directing was good; David Yates was a proper choice in movie number 5 (I think he’ll be returning for the Half Blood Prince). The one thing that I liked is the number of cameos in the film. While the characters they are portraying are really characters on the book, I considered them cameos because of despite their small screen time; they were able to steal the show. For me, the best performers were Imelda Staunton and Helene Bonham Carter, who perfectly played their roles of Dolores Jane Umbridge and Bellatrix Lestrange, respectively. The special were, as always, very good. I was left in awe during the battle at the Ministry of Magic. All in all, it was a dark yet fun film. This is one of those book-to-film movies that really give a different experience to audiences, whether they may be reading the book or watching the film.

Deathly Hallows is here!

After months of waiting and anticipation, I now hold in my hands the pivotal seventh and final Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I actually wanted to go to the 3:01am launch here, but I guess I’m too lazy to get that early. Anyways, I immediately went to the book store early that day to get my copy (I even got a free paper bag and a bookmark). Thankfully, they were selling US versions here (it is the version I collect). I started reading the moment I went home. Now I’m on Chapter 11, if only I had nothing else to do I would have finished the book right away. But at least I have the copy. *Mischief Managed* Hehe! I’ll be posting my insights on the book once I’ve finished reading it.

This means a lot to me because it was the time when all of the 'Ortiz' clan went home to the Philippines to celebrate the event. On being an Harry Potter fan

As I count down the days until unenviable release of the last harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, I’m so eager to as what the book will reveal. Who will die? What happens with everyone after? Is Dumbledore really dead? Many of these questions linger through my mind as I excitedly wait for the July 21^st release date. Harry Potter was the reason I started to read books. Now that I’ve got my copy reserved I couldn’t wait what the last installment has in store for of us “HP Fanatics”… I’m probably more excited on the book than the movie, but that does not mean I wouldn’t watch the film. I’ll do it all on the same day. Ironically since the theater and the bookstore stands right beside each other… I wish I had better halves with me here to celebrate the 7^th book and the 5^th movie. Raissa and Kate, I wish you were here. It seems I cannot relate to one but you guys when it comes to Harry Potter. Now the decision I have to make is what would I do first? Read the book or watch the film? Ah decisions, decisions... No wonder some people find me weird. Hehehe.

Review: Transformers

I am actually not a fan of the Transformers toys, but I definitely was watching the cartoon series back when I was a child. That “Ei-Oh-Uh” sound was embedded on everyone’s mind, kinda like that deep breathing sound of Darth Vader. Come 2007, and Steven Spielberg produces this Michael Bay-directed epic. A sure blockbuster? Definitely. I went to the special screening of the film last week , and boy was I impressed. The plot was simple; Autobots are seeking out the Allspark, a cube like device that has the ability to ‘transform’ mere objects into cybernetic organisms. They must get it before it get into the hands of the Decepticons, who would use the cube’s power to wipe out humankind to extinction. Acting was great, especially Shia LeBeouf, who may be the next big star. Megan Fox was hot and other supporting characters all performed very well. Now to the stars of the film itself. The Autobots, headed by Optimus Prime, was one of the best rendered digital characters I saw on the big screen. While watching, some part of me was actually thinking if the robots are real or not. Even on the big screen, he still has the charisma that I loved when I was a kid. Megatron was also great, though some of the other Decepticons didn’t have as much screen time as expected. The action scenes? WOW. Michael Bay is a great director. Some action scenes I liked were from his films. Those slow-motion epic shots definitely bring tears to my eyes. One scene I loved was the arrival of the Autobots, the shots coupled with choral music bring chills to my spine. I love that scene. I definitely had a great time, and if not for the high prices of cinemas here, I would have watched it more than once. Sure, there numerous plot holes in the film, but who cares? This is Transformers. Sequel please! Transformers: 9/10

Review: Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

While the first Fantastic Four movie was a bland excuse to show Jessica Alba’s smoking’ hot body, I still went on to go see Rise of the Silver Surfer. While I do not have any comic background with the Fantastic Four or even the Silver Surfer, I watched the film expecting nothing. Well, how right was I. The movie was poorly scripted, even with Ben and Johnny’s constant torture with each other wasn’t even funny anymore. Their acting seemed like they literally just reading directly from the script. Dr. Doom, who technically is the main villain, appears only on half of the film and practically does nothing besides ‘monolouging’. And the Silver Surfer? That’s what you get, a silver being on a surfer. Some part of me was dismayed as I should have just used my money on buying Mocha Frap at Starbucks instead. Well okay, not all is bad. Action scenes and special effects were a lot better this time. This would have been a great film, but due to poor scripting, horrible acting and bad directing, sadly this movie falls far behind along with other crappy comic book adaptations like Elektra or even Ghost Rider.
